Snails sheltering beneath retained Artichoke stems

Written by: Nige Anderson on May 9, 2026

Large numbers of snails were found sheltering beneath retained Artichoke stems and decomposing organic matter from the previous season.

The retained material created cool, moist protected spaces near the crown of emerging seasonal regrowth.

The same organic matter that builds soil and protects moisture can also create refuge for pest species.

These notes are based on general observations from working in gardens. Every site is different, so individual conditions should always be considered.
