Forked carrot from transplanting and soil resistance

Written by: Nige Anderson on May 2, 2026

Carrots grown from transplanted seedlings often develop forked or distorted roots.

Root disturbance early on, combined with resistance in the soil, leads to divided growth rather than a single taproot.

Direct sowing into loose, well-prepared soil generally produces better form.

These notes are based on general observations from working in gardens. Every site is different, so individual conditions should always be considered.
